This week on Fandom Fridays we’re going to talk about something dear to my heart: the CW show Supernatural. I started watching Supernatural back in 2012 and got bored with season 1. I took a year off from watching it and then got back into it the summer of 2013. It took me the whole summer to watch 7 seasons and a day to watch season 8 before the season 9 premiere. Now I am just flat out obsessed with it. I never miss an episode, and have seen all 200+ episodes more than once.
To me, Supernatural is much more than just a show. It’s made me friends that will last a lifetime and given me actors to look up to.
Fandom Fridays: Supernatural Edition
Brief plot overview: Supernatural is the story of two brothers who hunt monsters. The monsters range from vampires, werewolves, sirens, angels, demons, etc. You get the drift. At first glance this just looks and seems like any other horror television show. But, with 12 seasons and a thirteenth in production, it HAS to be more than just a horror show.
It stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki as Dean and Sam Winchester, respectively. Misha Collins stars as angel Castiel and Mark Shepperd as Crowley, the King of Hell. Mark Pellegrino is Lucifer and Samantha Smith came back as Mary Winchester this season after being dead since the show premiered. And those are all you really know for season 12 at least, but the show has an enormous cast which you can look at here. Jared met his wife because she was a character during season 4 and they now have 3 kids together. Jared’s kids call Jensen ‘uncle Jensen’ and they have playdates on the regular. Jared, Jensen, and Misha all gang up on Mark in a brotherly relationship.
Many of the stars of Supernatural use their platforms as stars of a hit TV show for good. Misha founded GISHWHES to raise money for Random Acts, which he also made as a nonprofit. Jared has his ‘Always Keep Fighting’ campaign where he raises money for the nonprofit To Write Love on Her Arms to raise awareness about depression. Jensen and Misha collaborated and Mark made his own t-shirt campaign as well. The ladies of Supernatural started the Wayward Daughters campaign. I love this show because the actors are just so passionate for what they believe in. They know that they have a platform and a following and they are using it to do incredible things.
