The Mandalorian: Chapter One Review

Hello everyone! Today I’m so excited to be giving my review/first thoughts on The Mandalorian! Chapter One is the first episode of the highly anticipated new show from Disney+. It follows a Mandalorian Bounty Hunter post the fall of the Empire trying to survive in a lawless galaxy.

The first episode was available at the launch of Disney+, with the next coming out on Friday (tomorrow) and the rest coming out every Friday after that for a total of 10 episodes.

I’m going to try to make this a regular thing that occurs here, but we’ll see. Hopefully I’ll manage to make it work and remember to tag it for easy finding. And hopefully they will make sense.

Enough about that though, let’s get onto the post. Small warning: it’s been a bit since I’ve done a review that wasn’t me just screaming about something so I’m a bit rusty when it comes to doing them.

Before proceeding, read my spoiler warning here and proceed with caution.

This was probably one of things I was most excited about with Disney+ (that and being able to watch Empire Strikes back 20 times in a row – which is definitely what I am doing right now as I write this). It’s different than what we’ve seen before – not all about the Skywalker family for a change and about someone else and their story. It’s a fresh new concept and I’m excited to see where the rest of the season goes.

First things first – Pedro Pascal does a brilliant job as the Mandalorian. Without being able to use his face to act his body language does fucking wonders. Give the man an Emmy right now because shit man he deserves one. I could never be an actor because man, I have absolutely no clue how I would even do any of that. He also doesn’t talk very much. So my mind is even more blown because he does next to no talking and yet you can feel what he’s feeling.

Seriously it amazes me. It makes you terrified of him – the mask, the barely any talking, his body movements, the action. It does its just job and I love it so very much.

Second, it’s beautiful. The scenery, the production design, the editing, score, it’s all beautiful. The cinematography is incredible and does a fantastic job at showcasing all the beautiful scenery and new places.

I like how they didn’t really shy around the point with this. They got straight to it – he’s a bounty hunter doing what it takes to survive. It takes place after Return of the Jedi it seems because they mention the Empire was no more. We see a small flashback of the Mando’s childhood, very quickly through a series of quick flashes.

The most exciting thing for me out of this whole episode was really the end. The baby Yoda creature really was the thing that sparked my interest – are we finally going to learn more about that race?! Some people are confused because it looks like a baby – and even I am referring it to as Baby Yoda – but then he says that the species age differently and it’s actually 50 years old. This show is actually so different than anything Star Wars has put out and it excites me so much!

This makes me excited for the Cassian series and the Obi-Wan series. It’s clear they’re pulling out all the stops already to make this show the best it can be and to make it distinctly different from the Skywalker Saga and other movies, so if they’re doing that with this then I can’t WAIT to see what they do with Cassian, who we know little about, and what happens to Obi-Wan after ROTS.

Thank you and I’ll see you Monday for Chapter Two! Let me know down below or on Twitter what you thought of the first episode.

I had mixed reactions to it but am intrigued as to where they’re going, the casting is too good for it not to be anything other than rather good.

My feeling was that they had a few mis-steps regarding the tone in some places, particularly the bit where the Mandalorian was riding the big tadpole with legs with the Rocky theme tune (okay it wasn’t but it had that same feint to it) playing over it in a sort of montage, that bit, for me, dragged me out of it. But I quite liked everything proceeding that (especially any bar scene) and the spaghetti western it turned into towards the end.

Understandable! The thought of it having a spaghetti western feel didn’t even cross my mind until I read your comment.

I did bypass your review in case of spoilers, but it looks like a great TV show.
